Broadway hit Hamilton hip hopping to London in 2017?

Lin Manuel-Miranda’s new musical looks destined for the West End

Hamilton, the hip hop history musical that has caused a sensation on Broadway, could be heading to London in 2017.

Producer Cameron Mackintosh told the Evening Standard there is "every intention" for the show, which is created by and stars Lin-Manuel Miranda, to come to the capital.

Miranda, whose previous hit In the Heights is soon to be revived at the King's Cross Theatre, added: "We're hoping it will happen sooner rather than later."

Hamilton, which tells the story of US founding father Alexander Hamilton, has won fans including Barack Obama and Samuel L Jackson. After premiering at the off-Broadway Public Theatre, it opened on Broadway with advance sales of over £20 million.

Directed by Thomas Kail and inspired by Ron Chernow's biography of Hamilton, the show also features George Washington, King George III and Thomas Jefferson.

Miranda, who plays the title role on Broadway, hinted that he may reprise his performance in the West End, saying: "My wife is always trying to get me to other countries so I would be honoured to open the show in London."

Mackintosh, who previously worked with Hamilton producer Jeffrey Seller to bring Avenue Q to London, said that Hamilton could open here in 2017.
