The newly refurbished Playground theatre has announced its premiere production, Picasso, starring Peter Tate in the titular part.

Tate, who was also one of the founders of the theatre, will be directed by Michael Hunt in the production, which charts the life and anxieties of one of art's most renowned legends. It is written by Terry D'Alfonso (A Dangerous Game, BBC). The show runs at The Playground from 5 to 25 November, with previews from 1 November.

The show will combine live video with performance to explore the artist's life, with design by Klara Zieglerova and lighting design by David Cunningham.

Co-artistic director of The Playground Anthony Biggs said: "We are tremendously excited to launch The Playground Theatre with this visceral and challenging work. It is very much a statement of intent. The Playground has always been a place for artists to develop ideas and push boundaries, so it's fitting that our inaugural production should be about Picasso, one of history's most influential artists."

Picasso runs at The Playground from 5 November to 25 November, with previews from 1 November.
