The new solo show is adapted by Simon Stephens
Producers of the eagerly anticipated production of Vanya, starring WhatsOnStage Award-winner Andrew Scott (Present Laughter, Sea Wall), have announced details for an Under 30s lottery for the chance to purchase £10 tickets to the first West End performance on 15 September.
Wessex Grove’s Benjamin Lowy and Emily Vaughan-Barratt commented: “We’re thrilled to be able to offer tickets at £10 for under 30s to the very first performance of Vanya in the West End, enabling as many as possible to share in this production and Andrew Scott’s monumental performance.
“We are committed to cultivating a new generation of theatregoers and are very proud to be having this special performance where every single seat is £10.”
Entry is via an online ballot with winners receiving the opportunity to purchase up to two tickets. A valid government-issued ID must be presented with tickets upon entering the theatre.
The piece, adapted by Simon Stephens (Sea Wall, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time) from Chekhov’s Uncle Vanya and directed by Sam Yates (The Phlebotomist), will see Scott play all the roles normally taken on by a company of performers. Stephens’ piece is billed as a “masterpiece of love, art, sex and attempted murder.”
Scott previously said: “Heartbreaking, hilarious, sexy, devastating – the genius and extraordinary humanity of Mr Chekhov just knocks me out. It’s a genuine honour and a singular challenge to bring this giant of a play to life in the West End in this new way and I’m so excited to be doing it alongside such brilliant, playful and talented people.”
The creative team also includes set designer Rosanna Vize, lighting designer James Farncombe, sound designer Dan Balfour, video designer Jack Phelan, movement director Michela Meazza, costume designer Natalie Pryce, associate designer Blythe Brett and assistant director Francesca Hsieh.
Vanya will play for an initial preview period at Richmond Theatre in south London from 28 August to 2 September, before a West End season at the Duke of York’s Theatre from 15 September to 21 October. Tickets are on sale below.
