Andrew Smaje is leaving his role as chief executive of Hull Truck Theatre.

Smaje joined Hull Truck in 2010 from Theatre Royal Bath’s Ustinov Studio. He has since overseen a number of new writing initiatives and personnel changes, including the departure of John Godber. He was also a vocal critic of cuts to arts funding.

In a statement, Smaje expressed his gratitude to the theatre’s “excellent team” for the “tremendous job they have done in helping to turn Hull Truck around in the last couple of years”.

Chair of Hull Truck Theatre, Sarah Jane Dickenson, said Smaje had “developed and diversified the artistic profile” of the theatre during his time as chief executive and had “successfully supported the production of work which has attracted new audiences and critical acclaim”.

She added: “Having taken the theatre through a significant period of change, Andrew is now leaving the company to pursue new opportunities.”
