Sleeping Beauty (Wolverhampton)

Kieran Johnson reviews the festive favourite Sleeping Beauty at the Wolverhampton Grand Theatre

Pantomime is certainly a magical time of year for theatre and the Wolverhampton Grand does not disappoint with laughs-a-plenty in Sleeping Beauty. With sparkling effects, big songs and a well-known tale at the centre of the action, this show is the ideal festive treat.

Joe Pasquale leads the cast as Muddles with his well known slapstick humour and comedic rapport with the audience. He is almost perfectly suited for pantomime, with all the children around me falling for his silly and frivolous jokes.

Ceri Dupree proves to be the most glamorous dame as Queen Pasionella. His wardrobe consists of a faaabulous array of headdresses, wigs, beads, jewelry and shoes that add to the flamboyant persona of the character. An impressive impersonation of Tina Turner shows off his unique singing voice.

Once again the pantomime at the Wolverhampton Grand sparkles just as much as it has done every year I’ve been to see it. It’s fun, magical and gets the whole audience in the Christmas spirit!

Sleeping Beauty plays at the Wolverhampton Grand until 18 January.
