He has been diagnosed with a cyst on one of his vocal chords which needs to be surgically removed as soon as possible. It is the latest in a series of vocal problems that have plagued Villazón in recent years.

He will no longer participate in the recital performance with Antonio Pappano on Wednesday 24 June 2009. His management Universal Music Classical Management & Productions confirmed today in London that Rolando Villazón will return to performing in 2010.

Villazón burst on to the London scene several years ago with a hugely impressive performance as Offenbach’s Hoffman and has since been seen as Rodolfo (La bohème), the Duke of Mantua (Rigoletto), Lensky (Eugene Onegin) and Don Carlo in the new production of Verdi’s opera last year. His appearances are always greeted with great anticipation, so the cancellation will hit his fans hard.

The singer has said “I would like to apologise to my wonderful audience for any inconvenience these cancellations will cause them and want to express my gratitude for the loyalty and support of my fans and friends. I am greatly looking forward to be performing again in the coming year.”
