Purple Rain will make its Broadway premiere next spring.

The new musical, based on Prince’s 1984 album and film of the same name, will begin performances at Broadway’s Majestic Theatre on 12 March 2027, ahead of an opening night on 12 April 2027. Casting is to be announced.

Featuring more than 20 songs by Prince, the musical follows The Kid, an aspiring musician in 1984 Minneapolis as he navigates family tensions, rival performers and a burgeoning music career.

The production has music by Prince, a book by Peter Duchan, music supervision, arrangements and orchestrations by Jason Michael Webb, choreography by Ebony Williams and direction by Saheem Ali.

Bobby Z and Morris Hayes, both longtime collaborators of Prince, serve as music advisers on the production.

The creative team also includes set designer David Zinn, WhatsOnStage Award-winning video and projection designers Nathan Amzi and Joe Ransom, costume designer Montana Levi Blanco, lighting designer Justin Townsend, sound designer Gareth Owen, hair and wig designer Cookie Jordan and makeup designer Kyle Krueger. Casting is by the TRC Company, with Amanda Spooner as production stage manager.

The original Purple Rain film, released in 1984, marked Prince’s film debut and won the Academy Award for Best Original Song Score. Its accompanying album spent 24 weeks at the top of the Billboard 200 and features songs including “When Doves Cry”, “I Would Die 4 U”, “Take Me with You” and “The Beautiful Ones”. The album recently re-entered the Billboard 200 chart.

Tickets for the Broadway production will go on sale in September.
