Last night (9 October) we took theatregoers to Jonathan LewisOur Boys, starring Laurence Fox and Matthew Lewis, among others.

The play gives a funny yet candid account of the tedium, terror and
tribulations suffered by five young soldiers recovering from
injuries incurred in the line of duty, and is based on Lewis’ own experiences.

Directed by David Grindley, Our Boys has designs by Jonathan Fensom and runs at the Duchess Theatre until 15 December.

After the show, we were joined by director Grindley, writer Lewis plus members of the cast for a Q&A.

WOSOuting to Our Boys

Lewis Reeves, Jolyon Coy, Matthew Lewis, Cian Barry, David Grindley, Jonathan Lewis, Laurence Fox & host Terri Paddock

Playwright Lewis talked about his own experiences in the army which heavily influenced the play, and how Jolyon Coy’s character is based on himself. Director Grindley then told us of his previous experience with the play, as an ASM on the original production.

Grindley talked about the similarities of working on Journey’s End with this production of Our Boys, and the cast each discussed their roles and what attracted them to them. They also talked about meeting and talking to soldiers, and how that helped their understanding of the characters,

Finally, the secrets of the Beer Hunter game in the show were revealed, and Lewis told us his own story of when and how he left the army.
