The show, likes its protagonists, moves from Edinburgh to London

One Day will open in the West End this autumn.
The new stage adaptation is based on David Nicholls’ 2009 novel about the long-term and fractious relationship between Emma and Dexter, with the London season comes following a preview run at Edinburgh’s Lyceum Theatre.
Penned by David Greig, it has music and lyrics by Abner and Amanda Ramirez of Johnnyswim, with additional material by Jeremy Sams.
The show is set on St Swithin’s Day (15 July) across multiple years as a couple grow from students into adults. It was adapted into a solidly received film in 2011, followed by a much-loved 2024 Netflix series.
WhatsOnStage and Olivier Award nominee Jamie Muscato will once again play Dexter, while Sharon Rose, labelled a name to watch in 2026, will return as Emma. The pair were exclusively revealed by WhatsOnStage last July.
Simon Friend and Hanna Osmolska for Melting Pot said: “From the moment we encountered One Day, we recognised its extraordinary emotional power. This is a story for anyone who has been in love, for anyone whose life hasn’t gone to plan, for anyone whose life has, for anyone who has had a parent, or a child, or a friend – so everyone really – which is why is has resonated with millions of people around the world.
“With a remarkable creative team, a score that takes us on the emotional rollercoaster of Emma and Dexter’s journey, and the world-class talents of Jamie Muscato and Sharon Rose originating the lead roles, One Day the Musical promises to be a very special show indeed. We cannot wait to bring this story to life on the West End stage.”
Directed by Max Webster, the creative team includes choreographer Carrie-Anne Ingrouille, musical supervisor, musical director and co-arranger Nigel Lilley, set and costume designer Rae Smith, lighting designer Bruno Poet, sound designer Simon Baker, orchestrator and co-arranger Simon Hale, and casting director Stuart Burt.
It will run at the Garrick Theatre from 17 November, booking to 14 March 2027. Tickets are on sale now.
