Nicola Roberts discusses her debut in Hadestown and the ‘sloppiness’ of Persephone

Last night, the West End production of Hadestown celebrated the arrival of Nicola Roberts, who has joined the cast at the Lyric Theatre, taking over the coveted role of Persephone.

Roberts previously began performances in City of Angels at the Garrick Theatre in 2020; however, the show never made it to its official opening due to the global pandemic and subsequent lockdown, making the evening’s festivities that much more special for the popular Girls Aloud singer.

Also featured in the current London cast are Desmonda Cathabel as Eurydice, Chris Jarman as Hades, Cedric Neal as Hermes, Dylan Wood as Orpheus, and Melanie Bright, Allie Daniel and Lauran Rae as the Fates, alongside Femi Akinfolarin, Michelle Andrews, Ollie Bingham, Laura Delany and Sebastian Lim-Seet as the Workers, and Lucinda Buckley, Juan Jackson, Oisín Nolan-Power, Lindo Shinda and Jasmine Triadi as swings.

With music, lyrics and book by Grammy-winning singer-songwriter Anaïs Mitchell, the award-winning show has direction by Tony Award-winner Rachel Chavkin. It returned to UK shores last year for an open-ended spell at the Lyric Theatre, going on to be nominated for three WhatsOnStage Awards – and Melanie La Barrie won for her performance as Hermes.

The creative team includes David Neumann, Rachel Hauck, Michael Krass, Bradley King, Nevin Steinberg, Jessica Paz, Liam Robinson, Michael Chorney, Todd Sickafoose, Ken Cerniglia, Maria Crocker and Tarek Merchant, with casting by Jacob Sparrow and additional casting by Rob Kelly.

The production is produced in London by Mara Isaacs, Dale Franzen, Hunter Arnold, Tom Kirdahy and the National Theatre in association with JAS Theatricals.
