Nichola McAuliffe, Andrew Hall and Caroline Harker will lead the cast of York Theatre Royal's upcoming revival of Noel Coward's Blithe Spirit.

McAuliffe, recently seen on stage in Maurice's Jubilee and A British Subject, both of which she alos wrote, will star as the eccentric medium Madame Arcarti. The role is currently being played in the West End by Angela Lansbury.

Blithe Spirit, which runs from 9 to 31 May 2014, will be directed by York Theatre Royal's artistic director Damian Cruden.

"Blithe Spirit holds fond memories for me," said Cruden. "It's the first play I remember going to see as a child. I was 12 and remember seeing my mother playing the part of Elvira. This was a proud moment and one that will stay with me."

Caroline Harker, who plays Ruth Condomine, is best known as D.S Hazel Wallace in ITV's A Touch of Frost and for other onscreen appearances in Coronation Street, New Tricks, Casualty and Midsomer Murders.

Andrew Hall (Charles Condomine) is another familiar TV face having played the controversial Marc Selby in Coronation Street.

The cast will also feature Blair Plant as Dr Bradman, Louise Calf as Edith and Amy Rockson as Elvira.
