National Theatre Wales scoops £20k Space Prize

National Theatre Wales has continued its Edinburgh Fringe success by winning the newly created Space Prize.

The £20,000 prize is a new Fringe award that offers the winner a fund to create "unique online theatrical experiences" and is a collaboration between The Space (a free website to explore new art) and BBC Writersroom.

NTW won the Space Prize for their Border Games project, an immersive theatre gaming experience, which sees a live production run alongside an online stream.

The live production involves the audience attempting to illegally cross the guarded border between England and Wales, while the online stream works as an interactive experience in which users can influence the fate of the live audience.

Kate Rowland, creative director of BBC writing, said: "NTW has yet again pushed the boundaries of storytelling and created an idea that compels everyone to stand up and take notice."

Her fellow judge, director Stephen Daldry, added that Border Games was the "stand out winner".

This is NTW's second major Edinburgh Fringe prize since their formation in 2010. Last year Welsh playwright Tim Price was awarded the £10,000 James Tait Black Prize for his play The Radicalisation of Bradley Manning.

The Space Prize was announced as part of the Thinking Big event held at King’s Hall yesterday (10 August).
