My Top 5 Showtunes: Carly Thoms

Carly Thom's stage credits include The Rise And Fall Of Little Voice (Union Theatre), Thoroughly Modern Millie (Adelphi Theatre) and The Sound Of Music (UK and international tour).

She is starring as Miss Honey in the UK tour of Tim Minchin and Dennis Kelly's Matilda, which is currently running at Curve Leicester. Find out more information, including tour dates here.

We caught up with Carly and asked her: "If you were stranded on a desert island which five showtunes could you not live without?"

1. "My Man" from Funny Girl

Barbra Streisand’s rendition of "My Man" is my all-time favourite musical theatre performance. This tragically romantic song was originally written in French and has been performed by Edith Piaf and the real Fanny Brice!

2. "So Big/So Small" from Dear Evan Hansen

This song really takes you on an emotional journey, I don’t think I’ve managed to listen to it without crying! This new musical deals with the issue of mental health and I am pleased that it has received such critical acclaim. Hopefully, it will raise more awareness of this topic.

3. "Being Alive" from Company

I limited myself to one pick from Sondheim as I could easily fill all five with his music, "A Little Night Music" is my favourite. However, "Being Alive" from Company is my favourite song! I can’t wait to see Rosalie Craig and Patty LuPone in the new production at the Gielgud next year!

4. "Climb Ev'ry Mountain" from The Sound of Music

The Sound of Music was my first job out of drama school and it will always have a special place in my heart. In my opinion, Rodgers and Hammerstein’s melodies cannot be beaten and I love the message Mother Abbess gives to Maria through this song of never giving up.

5. "Do You Hear The People Sing" from Les Misérables

I love the sentiment of this number. It is a revolutionary song that calls for people to stand up and overcome adversity. I believe this message is very important in the current political climate.
