Southwark Council have unanimously approved a planning application to move Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts to a new home in Peckham.

Currently based in Wood Green, north London, the drama school recently signed a legal agreement to cover a finance package for the majority of the cost of building their new venue. They will now begin the process of fundraising for the move.

The venue will include an 80-seat studio space as well as a 200-seat performance space – the first on-site theatre for the academy.

The planning application also included two further studios, 22 teaching studios, music practice rooms, two TV studios and a radio suite.

Mountview alumni include actors Julie Atherton (Avenue Q), Brendan Coyle (Downton Abbey) and Laura Pitt Pulford (The Sound of Music), directors Maria Aberg (Hotel, NT), Edward Hall (Hampstead Theatre artistic director) and Michael Longhurst (Constellations), and playwright Alecky Blythe (London Road).

The new building is due to open in September 2018.
