Mark Strong and Hope Davis will star in the latest play by David Hare.

The actors will lead the cast of The Red Barn, a piece based on the novel La Main by Georges Simenon.

Hare sets The Red Barn in Connecticut in 1969 where two couples struggle home through the snow after a party.

Strong returns to the stage following his magnetic turn as Eddie Carbone in A View From A Bridge. Davis will make her UK theatre debut in The Red Barn. Her previous credits include the Broadway production of God of Carnage and the TV series In Treatment for which she received two Emmy Award nominations.

Robert Icke will direct Hare's play, which is produced in association with Scott Rudin.

Further casting is to be announced.

The Red Barn runs at the National's Lyttelton Theatre from 17 October to 19 November, with previews from 6 October.
