La Cage Aux Folles is still till running in London’s West End and John Barrowman is taking the lead in September. Also a tour has been announced for 2010.
However we know this is very unlikely to appear at the Theatre Royal as next April the West End Operatic Society have secured the rights to perform the show from the 26th for a week. With a professional director, Martyn Knight at the helm and the costumes from the London Palladium production this is promising to be a spectacular show.
The story involves Georges and his partner, the drag artiste Albin, star of the La Cage aux Folles nightclub. When Georges’ son announces his engagement to the daughter of a right-wing politician, who wants to close down the local colourful nightlife the future looks very bleak! With a visit from the prospective in-laws imminent, they all decide to take drastic action to hide their lifestyle… but can they keep it up?
La Cage aux Folles is a timeless and deliciously funny tale of family values, unconditional love, and above all, the need to celebrate who we are. With music and lyrics by Jerry Herman the show includes the hit song, I Am What I Am.
