Jordan Luke Gage confirms Redcliffe return after award win

Jordan Luke Gage, writer, composer and lyricist of the new musical Redcliffe, confirmed the show’s return.

The news was revealed as he won his first trophy at The Stage Debut Awards for the piece.

Redcliffe premiered at Southwark Playhouse Borough earlier this year, picking up a five-star review from our WhatsOnStage critic.

Set in 18th-century England, the musical is based on the story of William Critchard (who Gage also played) and Richard Arnold in Redcliffe, Bristol.

Gage dedicated his win to the two men and their relationship, saying: “They dared to love each other in a world where it was illegal to be gay and it was considered the worst crime of all. I can only imagine how terrifying that must have been.

“I hope somewhere they are looking down and are proud that we are continuing to say their names.”

Speaking to WhatsOnStage, Gage recalled: “When I wrote the show, I was crying almost every day, and I kind of had a feeling that it would affect people in the same way. But it was overwhelming every night looking out and seeing the audience be there with us and reacting. It was otherworldly.”

Since closing the show, the actor has taken a “welcome relief” from the emotional exhaustion of Redcliffe to perform in the world premiere musical adaptation of Thelma & Louise.

“What I can say is [Redcliffe] will be coming back very soon. We’re hoping that we will be able to announce something in the next couple of weeks… I’m very excited to do it again.”
