Writer Dougal Irvine scored a major hit in Edinburgh two years ago with Departure Lounge, which is soon to have a production in London at Waterloo East Theatre. Irvine unusually writes lyrics, music and libretto for his musicals and is talented in all three areas.
In Touch, a show in progress, immerses us in an Avatar inhabited cyber space world where relationships are carried out in chat rooms and physical contact becomes a problem for some.
The show is quirky, entertaining, intriguing, thought provoking and ulitmately hopeful. Skilfully directed by Ken Alexander, the musical is confidently performed by a group of musical theatre students from RSAMD. In Touch is presented in collaboration with the admirable Perfect Pitch, which fosters new musical theatre. Having lost its dedicated venue at George Square, it is heartening that new musical work is still being showcased at the Fringe. Especially when the material is as strong this.
