The Bristol Old Vic has announced a new production of Medea will feature as part of the new season.

The theatre's associate director George Mann will stage Medea following his work on Pink Mist – which also is to return to the stage next year. Medea will be staged with an all-female cast and will include new text from Chino Odimba.

Odimba will add to Euripides' play and Medea will be the playwright's main stage debut following her piece His Name is Ishmael which ran in the Studio in 2013.

The theatre also hosts productions of Tristan and Yseult, Escaped Alone, Sally Cookson's production of La Strada and Cheek by Jowl's The Winter's Tale.

The world premiere of Jack Thorne's Junkyard will open at the theatre in March.

At a launch in Bristol today, artistic director Tom Morris talked about the capital project and the future of the building itself. He said: "It was cutting edge 18th century acoustic technology when it was built – and quite quickly a generation of stars of the future started to find their voices on its stage.

"Our 251st year is inspired by and features the emerging generation of ground-breaking artists who will define the future of theatre for us all."
