Hot on the PVC heels of their Golden Globes win, it seems that calls for a Barbie musical are being heard far and wide
It seems that the stars and director of Barbie are fully on board with the idea of the show becoming a stage musical.
The film, which picked up Golden Globes for Best New Song and Cinematic and Box Office Achievement last night, earned almost $1.5 billion at the worldwide box office following its release last summer. But now it seems, some sort of future in the theatre may be on the cards.
When pitched the idea by Entertainment Tonight Margot Robbie, who also produces the flick, said that “this is not the first time we’ve thought of it, yeah”, adding that “It’s so fun when you can turn everything into a big, crazy musical number. Everything is infinitely more fun.”
Given Robbie’s influence in the cinematic side of things, a stage production may be a bit less of a pipe dream than might otherwise be the case. What’s more, co-producer David Heyman was also one of the minds behind Paddington, which has just announced a musical adaptation. So how far off would Barbie be?
Director Greta Gerwig agreed, saying: “I really love musicals. I mean, nothing would make me happier. So, I would love a musical.”
Robbie’s co-star America Ferrera, no stranger to musicals, believes that her character Gloria “has a number in her.”
What’s more, turning “I’m Just Ken” into an 11 o’clock number feels inevitable, after all…
