Tamsin Greig stars in West End premiere of Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown
Bartlett Sher's production will open at the Playhouse Theatre in January
WhatsOnStage Award winner Tamsin Greig will star in the West End premiere of David Yazbek and Jeffrey Lane's musical adaptation Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown later this year.
The production, which will be helmed by the show's original Broadway director Bartlett Sher, will open at the Playhouse Theatre on 12 January, following previews from 20 December.
Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown is adapted from Spanish director Pedro Almodovar's Oscar-nominated 1988 film of the same name.
The story revolves around a professional movie dubber who discovers unsavoury secrets about her married lover after he abruptly abandons her.
Tamsin Greig, star of TV series including Episodes and Green Wing, was most recently seen in the West End in Jumpy, which transferred from the Royal Court Theatre in 2012. Her other stage credits include The Little Dog Laughed, for which she won a WhatsOnStage Award for Best Supporting Actress in a Play.
Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown will mark Greig's musical theatre debut. "I feel very fortunate to have been encouraged - well, bullied - by my agent to have singing lessons, to learn new skills and to experience other creative mediums," the Green Wing star said. "I have also run out of excuses why I can't do it!"
Bartlett Sher, who directed the Broadway premiere in 2010, said: "I keep returning to Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown because Pedro's vision of the world and women, his humour and his style, seem more important now than at any time since the film premiered. It's a joy to return to Pedro's world."
Writers David Yazbek and Jeffrey Lane are currently represented in the West End by another screen-to-stage musical, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels.
They said: "We're thrilled to have the opportunity to re-imagine and present this show that has meant so much to us and particularly excited to be working with an actress as intelligent, brilliantly funny and right for the part as Tamsin."
Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown is being produced in the West End by Howard Panter for The Ambassador Theatre Group.
