Scenes from a Marriage will run at the St James from 16 September to 9 November 23013 (previews from 11 September), marking the venue’s first anniversary.

The play, adapted by Joanna Murray-Smith from Ingmar Bergman’s 1970s Swedish TV series, follows Johan and Marianne from happily married couple to warring contenders in divorce and beyond.

Olivia Williams previously worked with Trevor Nunn on his farewell production as artistic director of the National Theatre, Love’s Labour’s Lost. Her other theatre credits include Hotel in Amsterdam ( Donmar Warehouse), The Changeling (Barbican), Happy Now? (National Theatre) and In a Forest Dark and Deep (Vaudeville Theatre).

Scenes from a Marriage was originally designed by Rob Jones, and these have been adapted for the St James Theatre production by Al Turner; original lighting was by Paul Pyant, adapted by Derek Anderson and fight direction is by Terry King.

Further casting is still to be announced.
