Tamara Harvey's production of Tennessee Williams' Orpheus Descending opened at the Menier Chocolate Factory last night, following a run at Theatr Clwyd.

The cast includes Hattie Morahan as Lady Torrance, Seth Numrich as Val Xavier and Jemima Rooper as Carol Cutrere.

They are joined by Catin Aaron, Michael Geary, Valentine Hanson, Jenny Livsey, Laura Jane Matthewson, Mark Meadows, Ifan Meredith, Ian Porter, Carol Royle and Carrie Quinlan.

The play follows Lady, who is trapped in a loveless marriage, and whose small-town life is thrown apart by the appearance of a charismatic drifter.

In her four-star review for WhatsOnStage, Sarah Crompton said the 'tragedy lingers long into the night.'

Williams' piece was originally called Battle of Angels and was directed in a film version by Sidney Lumet called The Fugitive Kind starring Marlon Brando and Anna Magnani in 1959.

Jonathan Fensom designs, with lighting design by Tim Mascall, sound by Gregory Clarke and composition by Simon Slater.
