Syal’s George Survives WOS Post-Show Q&A

Last night (10 October) just under 100 theatregoers descended on
the Arts Theatre, with our free programmes in hand, for the Whatsonstage.com Group Outing to see The Killing of Sister George starring Belinda Lang, Helen Lederer and Elizabeth Cadwallader, as well as Meera Syal, fresh
from her WOS Award-winning performance as Shirley Valentine.

The play follows June Buckridge (Syal) who has
spent the last six years lending her voice to a radio show as the character
Sister George. However, in real life she is a bullying alcoholic who torments
her partner Alice (Cadwallader). When George is killed off from the radio show
to boost ratings, Buckridge’s goes into a deeper decline which has a catastrophic
impact on her relationship with Alice.

After the performance we were joined by the stars
of the show for an exclusive Q&A session. Giving us an insight
into the plays themes, the cast discussed how, although the main relationship in
the play is a lesbian one, the power struggle could be indicative of any
relationship. All the actors discussed their nervousness at taking on a new
role but the pleasure of having such strong female lead characters.

As always, please feel free to
email your comments and thoughts about the play, as well as any of your
favourite insights from last night to feedback@whatsonstage.com.
We would love to hear from you.
