West End goes Live – West End Live,
the world’s largest free theatre festival, took place last weekend in
Leicester Square (See Photos, 22 Jun 2009), and in
case you weren’t one of the thousands who made it along this year,
Whatsonstage.com TV editor Ian Miller was there, camera at the ready,
to film the action and capture performances from stars including Jerry Springer, Jodie Prenger and Patina Miller.
Been So Long
– Che Walker’s punchy, urban writing brought him high
praise for The Frontline, the first contemporary
play to be staged at Shakespeare’s Globe and he’s
now wowing the Young Vic audiences with his latest offering Been So Long.
The neon soaked new musical comedy features a pulsing score with a mix
of soul, funk, jazz, reggae and blues and continues to play at the
Young Vic until 15 June 2009.
NT Live
– Just one day to go before the National Theatre launches its ground-breaking initiative which will see several of their current shows
broadcast live to cinema screens around the world. The four show NT Live pilot season will launch with Phèdre, starring Helen Mirren, Margaret Tyzack and Dominic Cooper. The 25 June performance
will be filmed in high definition and broadcast via satellite to
approximately 65 cinemas and arts centres, reaching a widespread
audience live across the UK with a further 200 venues around the world
also screening the production.
Carrie’s War
– Following the success of its 2006 premiere production, the acclaimed
stage adaptation of Nina Bawden’s award-winning classic
comes to the West End this Summer. Carrie’s War
is the timeless tale of the adventures of Carrie Willow; a young girl
evacuated from London during World War II. An unforgettable story of
one ordinary girl – living and growing up through extraordinary times.
Playing at the Apollo theatre until 12 September 2009, it stars Kacey
Ainsworth and Prunella Scales.
Conley the hair to Ball – Next month (27 July) multi-award winning Broadway import Hairspray at
the Shaftesbury Theatre is welcoming a new cast. Brian Conley is
taking over from Michael Ball as Edna, and he’ll be joined by
newcomer Chloe Hart and Liam Tamne, who take over from original stars
Leanne Jones and Ben James Ellis as, respectively, Tracy Turnblad and
heartthrob Link Larkin. Hart comes straight out of Guildhall School of
Music and Drama, while Tamne was recently seen in Wicked.
