Shakespeare All Shook Up At Tara Arts

Shakespeare is getting
shaken up in south London this month as Earlsfield’s Tara Arts launches its own mini-festival,
Shakespeare RE-MIXED.

Over the next
fortnight, the cross-cultural theatre venue will be hosting a range of local and international artists
offering contemporary interpretations of Shakespeare’s plays using everything from
storytelling to puppet theatre.

A cast of vending
machine figurines take centre stage on 25 February as the innovative Tiny Ninja
Theatre presents its take on Romeo and Juliet. Last seen at
the RSC’s Complete Works Festival in 2007, the New York company – directed by
the visionary Dov Weinstein – are a rare treat in the UK.

National Theatre’s
storyteller-in-residence Jan Blake brings her unique narrative skills to Pericles,
the tale of the Prince of Tyre’s attempts to decipher the dangerous riddle of
King Antiochus (26 Feb), while fellow storyteller Inno Sorsy tackles the legend
of King Lear (27 Feb).

The following
week, two vibrant youth theatre groups join up for a double bill of witches and
fairies (6 and 7 Mar) as Little Actors Youth Theatre presents a physical theatre
version of Macbeth and South West Youth Theatre relocate A
Midsummer Night’s Dream
to a science laboratory. That’s two plays in
two hours – and with tickets for all these
shows just £6 (£3 concessions), there’s no excuse.
