Full casting has been announced for the new adaptation of The Unknown Island at the Gate Theatre, based on José Saramago's short story. The production will mark artistic director Ellen McDougall's inaugural production at the venue.

McDougall will direct Jon Foster (Idomeneus), Hannah Ringham (Islands), Thalissa Teixera (Othello) and Zubin Varla (War Horse) in the show, which previews at the Notting Hill venue from 11 September with an official opening on 18 September. The show will run until 7 October.

Portuguese writer Saramago, who passed away in 2010, won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1998. He wrote The Tale of The Unknown Island in 1997 and it was published in English two years later.

McDougall has also announced that the third production in her inaugural season will be Anna Deveare's Twilight: Los Angeles 1992, which opens on 15 January 2018. Directed by Ola Ince, the 1993 one-woman play covers the Los Angeles riots of the titular year.

The Unknown Island runs at the Gate Theatre from 18 September until 7 October, with previews from 11 September.
