Costumes from Sound of Music fetch $1.3m at auction

By • London

Costumes from classic film musical The Sound Of Music have sold at auction in California for a total of $1.3 million (£846,000).

The stage-to-screen musical, with songs by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II, starred Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer and premiered in 1965.

Items auctioned included the main outfit worn by Andrews as Maria, described in the auction handbook as "a heavy brown homespun Austrian-style dress".

Andrews wore the costume when singing "Do-Re-Mi" to the seven Von Trapp children (pictured).

Lederhosen worn by the children also went under the hammer at the 'Profiles in History' auction, which took place over the weekend.

A revival of the original stage version of The Sound of Music opens at the Open Air Theatre, Regent's Park next week (read our interview with Charlotte Wakefield, who plays Maria, here).
