Drift

A complex interweaving of stories set in Singapore and Shanghai intended to “parallel the performers’ experiences forging their way as foreigners in modern China”. The cast of nine from Shanghai Repertory Theater represent a host of people in different times, all from two families.

We meet characters at various ages and track their strained relationships with each other and with their homeland.

The characters are lightly sketched and a bombardment of facts detract from an emotional connection. But the video projection showing scenes from the cities provides a dynamic backdrop and at least we leave with a little more understanding of how it might feel to live in Shanghai.
