Played in Britain celebrates sixty years of remarkable post-war theatre – from J. B. Priestley’s classic play, An Inspector Calls (1946), to Laura Wade’s Posh (2010).

Presenting a fascinating overview of British theatre, each play is

accompanied by an original essay summarising its plot, impact and legacy

and features material from the V&A’s vast collection.

With narration by Simon Callow and commentary from critic Michael

Billington, Played in Britain explores 100 plays which created a

contemporary stir, either by provoking public outcry, or by breaking new

ground; these are plays that engage with the world around them.

Actors, set designers, costume designers and directors have contributed

audio interviews including actor Patrick Stewart (Waiting for Godot,

2009) and costume designer Sue Blane (The Rocky Horror Show, 1973).

First night reviews from the Guardian and the Telegraph newspapers

provide an insight into contemporary critical opinion.
