David Hare's The Moderate Soprano opened in the West End last night after premiering at Hampstead Theatre in 2015.

Roger Allam and Nancy Carroll star in the production, reprising their roles from the original run. Guests on opening night included Ralph Fiennes and Sophie Okonedo.

Directed by Jeremy Herrin, the show explores the life of Glyndebourne founder John Christie (Allam) and his relationship with soprano Audrey Mildmay (Carroll) on the eve of the Second World War.

In her four-star review of the production, Sarah Crompton described it as 'a love letter to a certain type of Englishness that Hare understands surprisingly well.'
