Donmar Announces Annual Trafalgar Residency
The Donmar Warehouse will launch an annual three-month residency at Trafalgar Studios 2 later this year.
The first Trafalgar season will open on September 30, and feature productions directed by Charlotte Westenra, Roisin McBrinn and Chris Rolls, RAD graduates from 2003-5 .
Westenra will direct Beau Willimon’s Lower Ninth, about Hurricane Katrina, McBrinn will helm an adaptation of Italian playwright Alessandro Baricco’s Novecento, and Rolls will revive Jean Cocteau’s Les Parents Terribles, translated by Jeremy Sams.
Speaking to The Stage, artistic director Michael Grandage said: “One of the points about the Donmar, which can become a criticism, bizarrely, is that when you become successful and you sell out and you’ve only got 250 seats, people are critical of the fact they can’t get in. It’s a frustration for us.
“The whole point of this, the Wyndham’s season and taking our work beyond London or abroad, is about getting more of our audience to see our work. It excites us to be able to take our work to as many people as possible. This initiative allows us to back young directors, but it also allows more people to see more Donmar work beyond our Covent Garden home.”
