The Strange Fruit Cabaret

About the Show

In the jungle that lies just beyond the colony, an unfamiliar song can be heard. Exotic birds of paradise caw-caw in the cacao trees. Underneath the fringes of emerald palm, a vision appears: the most beautiful woman you ever saw, her eyes as dark as a dream, naked but for her beaded adornments, with skin the colour of the cocoa bean. She stands tall and proud, her lips smiling sweetly. She offers a bowl full of wild and colourful fruits. Her sweet harvest fills you with desire and you find yourself lulled into a dangerous longing, as you sink suddenly into the depths of your lustful imagination… But this woman is not, and never will be, yours. And in her hands, it was a strange fruit she bore… Welcome to the Strange Fruit Cabaret, where all the darkest, most decadent excesses and pleasures of the world are revealed to you. Are you ready to be entertained? Strange Fruit is a tribute to Sarah Baartman and her daughters. Get ready to be dazzled by homages to artists such as Billie Holiday, Lucille Bogan, Josephine Baker, Betty Davis and Grace Jones – sexy pioneers of pleasure and social politics who broke boundaries with their tantalising talents. It is a romp through the last century, celebrating the black women who broke barriers, challenging the ways society expected them to be seen and heard. This is a celebration of the boldest, bravest, badass black women who dared to do things their way.
