ABOUT THE SHOW:

Danza Contemporánea de Cuba

Danza Contemporánea de Cuba return to The Lowry as part of a Dance
Consortium UK tour on 9 June 2012 following their first critically
acclaimed visit in 2010.

The programme of works to be performed includes a rare opportunity to
see the stand-out hit of 2010’s programme, commissioned by Sadler’s
Wells, DanceEast and Dance Consortium, George Céspedes’ Mambo 3XX1
featuring an electronic mambo soundtrack by progressive Cuban electro
group Nacional Electrónica. Audiences will also be treated to a World
Premiere from award-winning choreographer Itzik Galili. Inspired by
boxing, Sombrisa is set to Part 1 of Steve Reich’s Drumming.

The programme also includes a clever contemporary interpretation of the
opera Carmen?! by the Director of Helsinki Dance Company, Kenneth
Kvarnström, featuring seven of the male dancers from the company and
Bizet’s beautiful music arranged by Rodion Shchedrin.

For 50 years, Danza Contemporánea de Cuba has produced dancers of the
highest level with a style evoking the sensuality, soulfulness and heart
of the Cuban spirit. Collaborations with international leaders in dance
have fused with the company’s Afro Caribbean and Spanish roots to
produce an electrifying, evocative and distinctly unique expression of
all that is Cuban.

“Drop-dead gorgeous, performed in such perfect synch, and with such sexy
intensity, that you can’t tear your eyes away.” Daily Telegraph

Dance Consortium is made up of 19 large scale UK venues and is supported by Arts Council England.
