Glenn Meads gives his reasons why this Carole King musical should come to the U.K.
I caught the Carole King Biopic musical Beautiful in December. The show gives jukebox musicals a good name, so news that it might be headed here is welcome and here's why:
1. Carole King
This singer/songwriter has an extensive back catalogue and the original cast recording is proof of that. She has written hits for the likes of The Drifters and The Righteous Brothers, as well as having huge hits herself such as "It's Too Late."
2. Her Life
Like Tina Turner, she is one of life's classic underdogs. She fought to get her music heard and when the music industry wanted her music and not her to sing it, she battled on regardless.
3. The Star
If Jessie Mueller comes over with the show, it will be amazing as a star has been born. This gifted performer has genuine stage presence and lifts the show whenever it becomes generic.
4. The Jersey Boys
The Four Seasons musical goes from strength to strength in the UK. If you like this show, you'll adore Beautiful.
5. The narrative
Jukebox musicals sometimes get a bad name because of shoe-horned narratives. This time, we follow Carole King's life, the music is seamlessly intergrated and it works beautifully.
