It’s official: Jonathan Bailey and Ariana Grande are set to star in a new stage production of Sunday in the Park with George.

The musical features music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and a book by James Lapine, and is loosely based on the life of renowned painter Georges Seurat, responsible for large-scale work A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte. It has not had a major London production in almost two decades.

Bailey and Grande reunite after their blockbuster turns in the big-screen Wicked adaptation. Olivier winner and WhatsOnStage Award nominee Bailey was recently on stage last year in Richard II at the Bridge Theatre, with multi-award-winning Grande last on the stage in 2012 in A Snow White Christmas at Pasadena Playhouse.

The new production will be directed by Marianne Elliott, reuniting with Bailey after their work on Cock and Company, with design by the award-winning Tom Scutt. Scutt has recently won acclaim for his work on another Sondheim musical, Into the Woods, while Elliott’s Company was the toast of the West End and Broadway.

The production is produced by Empire Street Productions and presented in association with the Barbican, and will open at the Barbican Centre in London in summer 2027.

Tickets for the Barbican season will go on sale in May 2026 and will be available exclusively through the Barbican website and box office.

Further details about the production, including additional casting and creative team information, will be announced at a later date.
