Regé-Jean Page reveals plans for The Great Gatsby in the West End

Regé-Jean Page, the breakout star of Bridgerton, looks set to return to the stage in a new adaptation of The Great Gatsby. 

Joel Horwood and Maria Aberg are adapting F Scott Fitzgerald’s seminal cautionary tale for the stage, with Page in the title role and signed on as a producer, alongside Simon Friend of Melting Pot.

It will mark the first time the actor has performed on stage since his appearance in The Merchant of Venice at Shakespeare’s Globe in 2015 (which is pictured above), before he shot to stardom in Bridgerton. 

The news, first reported in Deadline and confirmed to WhatsOnStage by Friend, has yet to find a venue for a 2027 run.

Michael Longhurst, former artistic director of the Donmar Warehouse, will oversee the new production, reuniting with Page after directing the actor in The History Boys at Sheffield Crucible in 2013.

The Globe has a history of hosting actors on the verge of stardom – Jessie Buckley played Miranda on the Globe stage in the 2013 production of The Tempest (opposite Colin Morgan and Roger Allam), while Ncuti Gatwa starred as Demetrius in the venue’s 2016 production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream before he landed the leading role in Doctor Who. A young Eddie Redmayne made his professional stage debut as Viola in Twelfth Night, for Shakespeare’s Globe at the Middle Temple Hall in 2002.
