A special live recording of “Dear Bill” from Operation Mincemeat has been released.

Captured at the Fortune Theatre, it is performed by Olivier Award winner Jak Malone.

Malone originated the role of MI5 secretary Hester Leggatt in the West End and is now nominated for a Tony Award after reprising the role on Broadway. Fans of the show unearthed Leggatt’s true identity, and the rediscovery of the previously unsung hero is commemorated in a plaque at the London theatre.

Written by SpitLip (comprised of David CummingFelix HaganNatasha Hodgson and Zoë Roberts) Operation Mincemeat also earned Tony Award nominations for Best Book of a Musical and for Best Original Score

The first UK tour of Operation Mincemeat was announced last week.

Malone said performing the number has been “one of the most emotional and rewarding parts of my career.”

He added: “This version is my favourite recording we’ve done because the audience is right there with me.” Concluding: “For me, this is definitive, and we’re overjoyed it’s now available for everyone to hear.”

SpitLip said: “We poured our own little sadnesses, our grief, love and hope into this song, hoping to transform it all into something that could lift other people up. To watch Jak perform it every night and to see the catharsis it brings is a miracle to us. We’re so proud of it, of him, and of this very special recording.”

The recording is available to listen to on streaming platforms now.
