My First Ballet: Coppélia (Tour – Manchester)

Impressive first ballet for kids and their parents but the scene changes are too slow, says Sarah Bloomer.

Any piece of theatre that undergoes an adaptation to widen its appeal to younger audiences in an effort to make the art form more accessible should be celebrated.

My First Ballet: Coppélia

When English National Ballet and English National Ballet School formed a collaborative partnership to bring a series of ‘My Firsts’ to the stage, students of the Ballet school — and theatregoers alike — were guided through a fantastic and fun experience that heralded the beginning of an interest in classical ballet.

My First Ballet: Coppélia tells the story of eccentric toy maker Dr Coppélius who longs to bring his mechanical doll to life. But there is a jealousy amongst the villagers and when the Mayor’s daughter, Swanilda, catches her lover Franz staring at the doll on the night before their wedding, she breaks into Dr Coppélius’ weird and wonderful workshop and soon realises that his inventions are not all that they seem.

The third production in the My First… series, Coppélia is bursting with captivating music, beautifully choreographed dance by George Williamson, and all the magic of a fairytale love story, complete with a happy ending. Daniel Kraus is suitably peculiar in the role of Dr Coppélius and narrates the story with a rhythmic patience that enables an uncompromising understanding of each scene. Swanilda (Olivia Lindon) and Franz (Archie Sullivan) are zealous newcomers with discernible talent.

But there are extensive scene changes that disrupt the momentum leaving the audience restless, and the illusory gothic undertones of the piece, as well as the layers of moral and emotional complexity of it’s characters, are perhaps too advanced and intimidating for such a young demographic.

Coppélia is an expressive introduction to a laconic style of theatre that is presented with attainable poise. Through mime, symbolised resources, and ongoing engagement the opportunities to be inspired by ballet continues to reach audiences far and wide.

My First Ballet: Coppélia is at the Palace Theatre until 27 April and continues touring the UK.
