Martin Shaw will reprise the role of ex-secretary of state William Russell in the West End premiere of The Best Man, which opens at The Playhouse Theatre in March.

Gore Vidal’s political drama – which toured the UK last year – is about two presidential party candidates who are level in the polls for their party's nomination. All that separates an ex-Secretary of State and a populist newcomer is an endorsement from a former President.

Directed by Simon Evans (The Resistable Rise of Arturo Ui, Donmar Warehouse), further casting includes Jeff Fahey, Jack Shepherd, Maureen Lipman, Glynis Barber and Honeysuckle Weeks.

Shaw is best known for his TV roles including Judge John Deed, Inspector George Gently and The Professionals. His stage credits include Twelve Angry Men, A Man For All Seasons and The Country Girl.

Further casting to be announced.

The Best Man runs at the Playhouse Theatre from 5 March to 12 May 2018, with previews from 24 February.

Book tickets from 10am on 1 February 2018
