Awarded to one company per year, the Lowry are backing Monkeywood, who have produced plays here.
Manchester-based theatre company, Monkeywood, has been made an Associate Artist of The Lowry.
The title, which is awarded to just one theatre company each year, cements The Lowry’s commitment to Moneywood, which was created in 2003 by Martin Gibbons, Sarah McDonald Hughes and Francesca Waite.
As Associate Artists, Monkeywood will benefit from a package of financial support, rehearsal space, technical and marketing support, professional development and mentoring. It joins Idle Motion, Kill The Beast and Theatre Ad Infinitum on the Associate Artist scheme, which is supported by the Jerwood Charitable Foundation and Esmee Fairbairn Foundation.
Monkeywood's relationship with the Lowry has proved very fruitful over the years. The company is a graduate of The Lowry’s artist development programme. In 2010, it was chosen as one of four companies to receive support under the venue’s 'Developed With' strand – with which it developed and produced Once in a House on Fire based on the memoir by Andrea Ashworth.
That production was nominated for Best New Play and Best Studio Performance at the 2011 Manchester Theatre Awards. It also formed part of Northern Stage’s ‘Made in the North’ programme at the 2012 Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
