Man to Man with Tilda Swinton – first look photos released

Production images have been released for Man to Man, starring Tilda Swinton at the Royal Court Theatre.

The production, directed by Stephen Unwin, is currently running in the Jerwood Theatre Downstairs until 24 October 2026, with press night on 11 September.

Swinton plays Ella/Max in Manfred Karge’s play, translated from German by Anthony Vivis and revised by Unwin. The production reunites members of the original creative team, including designer Bunny Christie and lighting designer Ben Ormerod.

Swinton first performed the role more than 30 years ago at the Traverse Theatre and Royal Court Theatre. The current production marks her return to live theatre.

Set in 1930s Germany, Man to Man follows a woman who puts on her dead husband’s clothes and assumes his identity, living through war, dictatorship, hunger and persecution.

The production forms part of the Royal Court Theatre’s 70th anniversary season. It will transfer to the Traverse Theatre in Edinburgh from 29 October to 7 November 2026, before moving to the Berliner Ensemble in February 2027, where performances begin on 9 February. A New York season is planned for spring 2027.

The creative team also includes sound designer Elena Peña, projection designer Matt Powell, movement director Kane Husbands, design associate Verity Sadler, props supervisor Lily Mollgaard, associate director Eleanor Burke and voice by Hazel Holder.

Man to Man runs at the Royal Court Theatre until 24 October 2026.
