Jason Donovan cast in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat at London Palladium

Jason Donovan is to return to Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice's musical Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.

Donovan starred in the 1991 production as Joseph and will return to the stage this summer to take on the role of Pharaoh. The 1991 production was also at the London Palladium and resulted in an 18-moth run and a best-selling soundtrack album.

He will be joining Sheridan Smith, who will be playing the Narrator, with casting for the role of Joseph to be announced soon.

Donovan said: "You never know the measure of a moment until it becomes a memory, and what a moment that was for me. Joseph was a ground breaker in 1991, and what a blast it will be to be back on the prestigious Palladium stage and be part of it all again with a brand new cast in this re-imagined 2019 production. I'm looking forward to breathing new life into Pharaoh and I'm so relieved he doesn't wear a loin cloth!"

The revival production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat will be directed by Laurence Connor (School of Rock Miss Saigon), with choreography from JoAnn M Hunter, design from Morgan Large, lighting from Ben Cracknell and sound from Gareth Owen.

The show was originally released as a concept album in 1969 and has run in the West End, Broadway and all over the world. Songs included in the piece are "Any Dream Will Do", "Close Every Door To Me", "Jacob and Sons", "There's One More Angel In Heaven" and "Go Go Go Joseph". It tells the biblical story of Joseph and his eleven brothers.

The show runs from 27 June to 8 September, with opening night on 11 July.
