Glyndebourne screens Rossini opera

The opera is based on the story of Cinderella and Romanian mezzo Ruxandra Donose stars as the downtrodden heroine, while Maxim Mironov is her ‘Prince Charming’. The production under Glyndebourne’s Music Director Vladimir Jurowski, was directed by Peter Hall in 2005 and has become an enduring part of the Sussex opera house’s repertoire.

The recent cinema performances (The Royal Opera have been doing the same) have given regional audiences who can’t get to the opera houses or pay the relatively high ticket prices the chance to see some of the best productions on offer in a communal environment. It may not be quite the same as sitting in the stalls but it beats lounging in front of the telly with a DVD.

Other operas in this cinema season have been Handel’s Guilio Cesare, in the dazzling David McVicar production, and Laurent Pelly’s recent Hansel und Gretel.
