Gillian Anderson and Lily James opened in All About Eve in the West End last night, and a raft of stars joined them for the occasion.

Directed by Ivo van Hove and adapted from the 1950 film of the same name, the new piece runs at the Noël Coward Theatre until 11 May.

Guests at the theatre included Matt Smith, Tom Hiddleston, Indira Varma, Zawe Ashton, Charlie Cox, Toby Jones, Mark Rylance and the cast of Sex Education.

In her four-star review of the show, critic Sarah Crompton said the show "offers a wonderful central role to Gillian Anderson which she seizes with both hands and makes it her own."

The cast also includes Monica Dolan, Ian Drysdale, Tsion Habte, Jessie Mei Li, Julian Ovenden, Sheila Reid, Rhashan Stone, Stanley Townsend and Philip Voyzey.

All About Eve has set and lighting design from Jan Versweyveld, costume design by An D'Huys and music from PJ Harvey, as well as sound design by Tom Gibbons.
