Artistic director Christopher Haydon has announced his new season at the Gate Theatre.

Titled Icons and Idols, the season opens with the premiere of Elinor Cook's Image of An Unknown Woman (4 June-27 June).

Haydon, who directs, described the play as a "surprising, inventive exploration of the way a single, iconic image can galvanise an entire society".

The European premiere of Lucas Hnath's The Christians runs from 8 September to 3 October. Also directed by Haydon, it sees the pastor of a large American church deliver a sermon that threatens to fracture his congregation.

And completing the season is the UK premiere of Kate Mulvany and Anne-Louise Sarks' new version of Medea (2-28 November), presented in association with Australian theatre company Belvoir (The Wild Duck, Barbican).

Haydon added: "Each of these three shows takes a strikingly different look at the people, images and events that inspire us."
