The classic story brought to the stage by Eleanor Bergstein is a fantastic production directed by Sarah Tipple and choreographed by Kate Champion.
Welcome to Kellerman’s the holiday resort that is certain to entertain. We find ourselves amid the world of the Houseman family with Dr Jake Houseman (James Coombes), Mrs Marjorie Houseman (Julia Nagle) and their two daughters Lisa and Baby. The story follows the evolving relationship between Frances ‘Baby’ Houseman (Jill Winternitz) and the resorts dancer Johnny Castle (Paul-Michael Jones). The story highlights issues of class arising from the love affair along with issues of loyalty, family and right from wrong. This is a classic story of true love conquering all.
Flawless dance moves can be seen from beginning to end which are combined with seamless set changes and fabulous effects created by set designer Stephen Brimson Lewis. All the Dirty Dancing favourites are in there including “Be My Baby”, “Do You Love Me?”, “Hungry Eyes” and the signature tune “I’ve had the time of my life.”
The Tango, the Waltz and the Cha Cha Cha are all performed with perfect rhythm and timing. Truly sensational dancing as Penny Johnson (Nicky Griffiths) and Tito Suarez (Colin Charles) showed ‘they can really shake em down.’ The chemistry between the actors is clear to see and manages to capture the magic whilst adding to the realism of the musical.
A special mention is needed for two extremely talented actors Stefan Menaul and Emilia Williams who bring humour to their unique roles as Neil Kellerman and Lisa ‘hula’ Houseman.
Music, dance and humour this show is bursting with energy and has it all. This is a fabulous and captivating musical stage production which provides a wonderful evening of entertainment that should not be missed. The endless applause of the audience said it all.
