He might have sent his son Ty along to pick up his WhatsOnStage Award for Best Actor in a Play, but Tennant also sent us a message thanking theatregoers for voting for him.

The actor, who won for his performance in Don Juan in Soho, said: "I'm so chuffed to be winning this for Don Juan in Soho. It was an amazing experience working with the amazing Patrick Marber, the peerless Adrian Scarborough, and a fantastic cast of brilliant, talented, enthusiastic, wonderful people."

"It was a real privilege getting to do a play about Soho in Soho, especially over a summer when London suffered a couple of terrible attacks, the play itself began to feel like a real celebration of London, and indeed one of the real crown jewels of London, which is theatreland. The WhatsOnStage Awards is such a glorious celebration of that."

Tennant fought off competition from Bryan Cranston, Martin Freeman, Andrew Garfield and Andrew Scott to win the award, his fourth WhatsOnStage Award having won previously in 2009 (Hamlet), 2012 (Much Ado About Nothing) and 2015 (Richard II).
