The awards took place this afternoon
Winners have been announced of the 32nd Critics’ Circle Theatre Awards, which recognise work taking place over the past 12 months and are voted for by members of the Critics’ Circle drama section.
Productions recognised included Peter Morgan’s oligarch drama Patriots, which was named Best New Play, and Daniel Fish’s reinvention of Oklahoma!, which won Best Musical.
Among the performing categories, Giles Terera collected Best Actor for his roles in Othello and Blues for an Alabama Sky, while Patsy Ferran beat competition from Jodie Comer to win Best Actress for her turn as Blanche DuBois in A Streetcar Named Desire at the Almeida.
The Trewin Award for Best Shakespearean Performance went to Arthur Hughes, whose portrayal of Richard III marked the first time the Royal Shakespeare Company has cast a disabled actor to play the character. And Lizzie Annis, who has cerebral palsy, received Most Promising Newcomer for her performance as Laura in The Glass Menagerie.
Elsewhere, Lynette Linton was named Best Director for her production of Blues for an Alabama Sky at the National, while Best Designer went to Tom Pye for My Neighbour Totoro at the Barbican. Most Promising Playwright was won by Tyrell Williams for Red Pitch at the Bush, and the Empty Space Peter Brook Award went to the New Diorama.
Guests and presenters at today’s ceremony, which was held at new West End theatre @sohoplace, included actors Paul Mescal, Gethin Anthony, Juliet Stevenson, Tracey-Ann Oberman and Joanna Vanderham. There was also a preview of the new musical adaptation of The Time Traveller’s Wife, penned by singer-songwriter Joss Stone and Eurythmics star Dave Stewart.
