Casting has been announced for Care, written and directed by Alexander Zeldin, which will run in the Young Vic Main House.

The production will feature a multi-generational cast led by BAFTA nominee Linda Bassett as grandmother Joan. Rosie Cavaliero will play mother Lynn, Hayley Carmichael will play resident Simone, and Richard Durden will play resident John. Aoife Gaston will take on the role of nurse Fanta, while Llewella Gideon will play nurse Hazel.

William Lawlor will play teenager Laurie, and Ethan Mahony and Charlie Webb, both making their professional stage debuts, will share the role of youngest son Robbie. Participants from the Young Vic’s Taking Part Neighbourhood Theatre programme will also appear as care home residents.

The play follows a single mother, her two children and their grandmother. After a fall, the grandmother is moved into a care home against her wishes, where she is surrounded by residents adjusting to life away from their homes. As time passes, she begins to reassess what matters most in her life.

Zeldin explained today that the production explores how the subject of end-of-life encourages people to view life differently, adding: “We will, we have, or we are experiencing it. The Young Vic’s space has been an inspiration to me for years, I spent my 20s in awe of the work I discovered there, it is uniquely democratic, open, warm. It is a place we can go to be transformed.

“To collaborate with Linda Bassett, a true great of British theatre, and be part of Nadia Fall’s ambitious inaugural season, alongside our wonderful group of creatives and actors and co-produced by A Zeldin Company is very exciting.”

It runs from 11 May to 11 July, with press night on 19 May 2026.

The creative team includes set designer Rosanna Vize, costume designer Natasha Jenkins, lighting designer James Farncombe, sound designer Josh Anio Grigg, movement director Marcin Rudy, casting director Jacob Sparrow, intimacy director Katharine Hardman for EK Intimacy, fight director Sam Lyon-Behan, voice coach Carol Fairlamb, dramatherapist Patricia Ojehonmon, costume supervisor Caroline McCall, props supervisor Laura Flowers and associate director Kaleya Baxe.

Care is co-produced with A Zeldin Company and is the final Main House production in Fall’s inaugural season, which will conclude with the world premiere of Sting by Sophie Swithinbank, directed by Nancy Medina in the Maria Studio from 18 June to 18 July.
